Indications and Contraindications

Before you take Lamictal, you must tell your physician if you are taking any of the drugs below:

  • birth control medication based on hormons (any kind of pills, injections, and others)
  • Carbamazepine or Divalproex (also know by their trademarks as Carbatrol, Tegretol,Depakote)
  • Divalproex
  • Trileptal
  • Primidone
  • Phenytoin
  • Rifampin
  • Depakene

This is not a complete list and there might be other drugs that can interact with Lamictal.

Take this medication the way it was prescribed to you by your doctor. Always follow the indications on your prescription. Before stop taking Lamictal you must talk to your doctor first. You might experience serious seizures if you stop taking the medication suddenly. You need to decrease Lamictal gradually before completely stoping the treatment.

Lamictal may be taken with/without food (though recommended is to eat something). Lamictal tablets can also be taken with a glass of water or milk.

Birth control medication can diminish Lamotrigen's effectiveness, resulting in increased seizures. Your Lamictal dosage needs to change when you start/stop using anticonceptionals (or any other kind of birth control medication). Call your doctor if you want to stop your Lamictal treatment.

You should tell your doctor about all the prescription and medications you use. Including vitamins, herbal products, minerals, drugs prescribed by other doctors.

Lamotrigen is not indicated for the treatment of acute bipolar symptoms. Partial remediation of cyclically depressed persons ,especially teens and young adults, has an elevated corelation to suicide until remission obtains acceptable therapeutic levels.

You should always have some papers or wear a medical information bracelet which is proving that you are on Lamictal. In case of emergency people should be able to read that and act accordingly. And doctor or medical personel that treats you has to know that you are using a seizure medication.
