Lamictal dosage

Any medication has a specific dosage that is generally allowed to be administered in a person. Lamictal is no exception to it. It is normally advised to start Lamictal at a low dosage, look for any of the side effects in the patient and then stabilize the dosage level. The dosage of Lamictal depends on a large number of factors like age, weight of the patient, the medical condition being treated or other medical conditions the patient may have and current medications under use. Lamictal is a drug that is used to treat people with epilepsy or bipolar disorders. The dosage level advised for Lamictal can sometimes surprise patients. This level not only depends on factors like medical conditions currently experienced or other drugs under administration, but most importantly it needs to be started at very low dosage levels. It is very important to let your doctor know about the current medications especially the other anti-epileptic drugs and other medical disorders like any kidney or liver disorders. Increasing the dosage of Lamictal more than that prescribed by your doctor can prove to be harmful. It is reported that high dosage of Lamictal causes rashes on your body which can be life threatening sometimes. There are few other cautions that you need to adhere. In case you have stopped the drug for a few days, it is necessary that you inform your doctor before restarting the drug. Restarting the drug after a break is equivalent to starting a new course as far as Lamictal is concerned.

Lamictal usually comes in the form of tablets, orally disintegrating tablets or Lamictal CD tablets. It is generally taken orally once or twice a day as advised by your doctor. Lamictal CD tablets when taken orally can be chewed, or disintegrated in a liquid or consumed in a typical way as any other tablet. Disintegrating the tablet in liquid is very helpful when treating children or people who have swallowing difficulties. It is not recommended to take partial dosage of Lamictal CD tablets. Splitting the Lamictal CD tablet into halves will not give the proper dosage level to the patient. However, you have the liberty of splitting the regular Lamictal tablets into halves. But, it is not an easy task breaking these tablets correctly into halves. Therefore, it would be better to get a pill splitter from a pharmacy rather than complicating the situation. Lamictal orally disintegrating tablets should be moved around the mouth allowing it to dissolve slowly. It can also be placed under the tongue to have it dissolved immediately. They can be swallowed with or without intake of water. Lamictal can be taken with or without food. If the drug upsets your stomach, you can take it along with food.

Lamictal should be taken at the same time during the day to maintain a uniform level of the drug in your body. This is because every drug has its half-life. Half life of the drug is the time taken by it to reduce to half of its original level. If Lamictal is taken at uneven timings in a day, your Lamictal levels will be very high during certain time of the day or your body will be depleted of Lamictal during certain time of the day. Both of these situations are not conducive to a person's health. So it is essential that you take Lamictal or any anti-epileptic drugs at even intervals. For the drug to work properly, it should be taken as advised by your doctor. In case you are not sure about the dosage at any point of time, intake of Lamictal based on assumption can be fatal. Therefore, always consult your doctor and make yourself sure of the correct dosage.
